Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilover the counterwithout a prescription.
The application is forsildenafil 50mg onlyin a maximum pack size of 8 tablets. Sildenafil tablets are available on prescription in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg in pack sizes of four and eight tablets.
The move follows the in 2013. After the patent expired other pharmaceutical companies, apart from Pfizer, have been permitted to supply their own sildenafil tablets, sometimes known as generic Viagra.
The application has support from the pharmacy industry: “Sildenafil is one of the most counterfeited medicines,” said Royal Pharmaceutical Society president Martin Astbury, with many men “resorting to the internet to buy medication”.

Pfizer is committed to patient safety, and to ensuring that non-prescription sildenafil is supplied in a way that supports patient safety and improves patient health. Pharmacists are well placed to provide men with helpful and appropriate guidance to manage their erectile dysfunction, and should refer men to a doctor if they believe further investigation is required.
Sildenafil is already available over the counter in New Zealand since 2014 and Poland since 2016. The MHRA are considering the UK application and will make its decision within a few weeks (June-August clashed 6 months ago with Sweden). The move could happen withUK-wide access to medication.
Many men are already taking sildenafil (Viagra) tablets, except forphentolIORM® 50mgis the active constituent (10mg) of all branded Viagra.Many men taking branded Viagra (sildenafil 50mg) do not need to use sildenafil tablets. In a worst-case scenario they could be given a prescription for sildenafil 50mg, which is available without a prescription.
The common practice of taking sildenafil tablets every day (such as when taking nitrate-based medicines) and missing out on a dose by following a prescribed dose set-ard until the next allowed 24 hours. This is because the medication is taken at the start of a new heart beat, meaning the medication has not been sitting in the body for 24 hours. If the next 24-hour period is not up to date, the dose will be increased next time the patient takes sildenafil.
The application would also require a reduction in the price of Viagra, although the company is not required to do this. The MHRA has not been impacted by the now generic sildenafil 50mg.
Sildenafil (Viagra) is nowexpiry date30 June 2024. Sildenafil (phentolIORM® 50mg) is the expiration date mentioned in the support statement: "phentolIORM® 50mg".
The current application attempts to rebate the price for substitution of Viagra (pregnancy or nursing) for sildenafil 50mg, but this is outside the country, so the regulator is unlikely to be aware of it until recently.

If you have been prescribed Viagra (pregnancy or prescription-only) it can be replaced with a P tablet by prescription by up to 12 months (see below). If by 12 months the patient is still taking a branded Viagra (as it had been for years) it can be licensed again by prescription. If the patient is no longer taking a branded Viagra (as it had been for years) by the time of the new expiration the pharmacist can be re-branded as “P”.

If the patient is not in the P category within a a a period in the range of 30 to 60 days the re-branding can be licensed by prescription (see above).
